The Catacombes

Catacombs

Far underneath the streets of Paris is a labyrinth of passageways that are lined with the stacked bones and skulls of approximately six million people.  In the 18th century the bones from cemeteries were all taken here and arranged according to which cemetery they were from.  Kinda creepy but oddly interesting to see....

This is a very long narrow flight of stairs down into the catacombs, not for the claustrophobic!

The floor here was slippery limestone, I almost fell twice.

Afterwards it was a long walk back up the narrow stairwell to the land of the living.
